Kuffs (1993)
Written by: Thomas Bryce
When Mr. King asked if I'd be interested in taking part of his "Christian Slater Themed Week" on his blog my response was "Sounds right up my alley, if Heathers is already taken I'll call Kuffs" . . .
Well as you can see I didn't end up getting "Heathers"! Kuffs starring Christian Slater, Milla Jovovich, and Tony Goldwyn (The Bad Guy From Ghost) may have came out in 1992, but by all means it is still a by-product of the 80s Action Movie Era.
I only knew Slater up to that point from playing "Will Scarlett" in the Robin Hood movie, but this was one of those oddball movies that came along that was as funny as it was Violent, but somehow managed to squeak with a PG-13 rating!
First time I seen it was in the theaters with my Uncle Bob, I caught it a few more times over the years usually on basic cable, but to give a more accurate post for "Slaterocalypse" I netflixed it and watched it this past weekend!
Rather than write a full on Kuffs review, here are Five Reasons Why I love this movie more so now than I remembered loving it when I was 9 going on 10 . . .
005: This Picture below, it pretty much sums up the plot of the entire movie! When Brad Kuffs is murdered, his brother George (played by Slater) inherits his "Patrol Special" District . . .
After recently finding out that his girlfriend Maya (Jovovich) is pregnant . . . the aimless, jobless, high school dropout is now taking up the task to run the District even though he's in way over his head!
004: "The Kuffs Theme" By Harold Faltermeyer!
Harold Faltermeyer's score for the movie sounds like it was comprised of nothing but left over tracks from Beverly Hills Cop franchise! Just listen to the video below and try not to think of Axel Foley sticking a banana up a car's tailpipe!
003: Tony Goldwyn as "Ted Bukovsky"
It didn't really fit with the rest of the movie, but that scene really brought the ACTION!
Ok number one was going to be the following scene, during the opening credits starting we are treated to Timbuk3's "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" with Slater doing some goofy dancing with Milla Jovovich in their living room.
I remember that scene like it was yesterday, but what I didn't know was at the time of filming "Kuffs" she was only 15 (WTF)! So moving right along then . . .
So Now #1 Goes to lead Bad Guy Kane and his Keene Sense of Style! Kane (played Leon Rippy) steals the show in this movie, no only with his over the top performance, but also with his stellar wardrobe.
When robbing a convenience store, is it wise to do so with a shirt that has your own face on it!?

Good thing he's wearing a mask, right? |
There's also the epic "Fan" shirt and the multicolor one he wore at church!
Honorable Mention goes to the Patrol District's Police Dog, he is so old and past his prime you're waiting for him to keel over at any moment!

I'm Getting Too Old For This Shit! |
And Slater's many "Breaking of the Fourth-wall" moments! There is barley a scene that goes by without Slater looking directly at the camera and talking to us about where the story is going or shooting some wisdom our way!
While I would usually find this be a very annoying plot device when used in other movies, Slater makes it work really well here and moves the story along!
So yes that is why I love Kuffs in a nutshell, check it out sometime and enjoy all the special features the DVD has to offer . . .
A Title Screen and a Recommendation for "Dazed and Confused" and "Sneakers"!
