100 Bloody Acres (2012)
Starring: Damon Herriman, Angus Sampson, Anna McGahan
Writers & Directors: Cameron and Colin Cairnes
Synopsis (From Doppelganger):
The Morgan brothers are struggling to
keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business afloat. Their
secret recipe (using dead car crash victims in their product) was
once a boon, but now months have passed since their last find. When
younger brother Reg stumbles upon three stranded travelers, he cooks
up a radical solution to their supply problems, in hopes of finally
getting the respect of his big bossy brother Lindsay.
Review:
I went into this Australian mix of
comedy and horror not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly
surprised. 100 Bloody Acres is witty, gory, charming, and funny as
hell. It's the hilarity of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and the insanity
of Motel Hell thrown in a blender. The characters are awesome, the
story is entertaining, the music is perfect... this will easily go on
my list of year end favorites, for sure.
100 Bloody Acres is absolutely on point
from a visual aspect. Lots of beautiful countryside to look at,
and the central setting at the Morgan Brother's abode screams of
backwoods horror greatness. There's a couple of nifty POV shots, and
a completely awesome drug induced sequence. To avoid spoiling on a
mega scale, I'll leave it at that.
The acting is a total high mark here,
and everyone has great chemistry with one another. Damon Herriman and
Angus Sampson as brothers Reg and Lindsay Morgan are totally awesome.
Reg is the more pushover type, and Lindsay is the menacing “get
things done” kinda guy. He's not without funniness, though. Anna
McGahan plays Sophie, one of the travelers who Reg picks up early on.
McGahan is gorgeous, and together, her and Herriman bring a lot of
charm to the interaction of their characters. Oliver Ackland and
Jamie Kristian are more than solid in their roles, as well.
100 Bloody Acres goes pretty big, as
far as bloodletting goes. Some of it's funny, some of it's intense,
all of it's gory. The FX are largely practical, too. Great
makeup on some of the characters, and there's some stuff that goes
down in the Morgan barn that's just straight up nasty. Gorehounds
will be pleased.
I couldn't ask for a better movie
soundtrack in a movie like this. There's enough knee slapping ditties
to leave a red mark, and the Morgan's Organic commercial theme is
amazing.
Final Word:
I was super impressed with 100 Bloody
Acres. It's always nice to go into a movie expecting nothing and end
up getting so much. It's also a rarity for horror and comedy to be
mixed so perfectly. Definitely looking forward to more from Cameron
and Colin Cairnes.

Mood Reel
Gag Reel: Really funny stuff in this feature.
Recording the Audio Ad: Morgan brothers go to record their bit for their Morgan's Organic radio ad.
Morgan's Organic Radio Ads
Morgan's Organic TV Commercials: Probably my favorite feature on the disc. It's about ten minutes of different public access style television commercials for Morgan's Organic, featuring the crazy enthusiastic Reg and the not so enthusiastic Lindsay.
Col & Cam do the shed scene: Writers/Directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes perform one of the scenes from 100 Bloody Acres.
Reg the Dog's Audition: Pretty short bit and really adorable.
Theatrical Trailer
Celestial Avenue: Colin & Cameron Cairnes short film, featuring Angus Sampson. Really funny, but also quite charming and beautiful. It's about twenty minutes long and totally worth your time.
Final Word:
This DVD is fairly loaded, with a lot of neat and short features. Definitely fun to look through.
